Recipients of awards

Prof. Dr. Rifat Skrijelj started his term in office of University of Sarajevo Rector on 1 October 2016. He replaced Prof. Dr. Muharem Avdispahic, who was the Rector which from 2012. Prof. Skrijelj’s term in office is four years; until 30 September 2020.

Prof. Dr. Rifat Skrijelj ended his studies of biology in 1987 at the UNSA Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, got his MA in 1991 at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and successfully defended a PhD in in biological sciences in 1995 at the University of Sarajevo Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Prof. Skrijelj started his academic career in 1987 when he became a teaching assistant at the University of Sarajevo Institute of Biology University of Sarajevo and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He was elected into senior assistant in 1992, and in 1996 appointed in assistant professor. He was elected into associate professor in 2002, and in 2009 he became full professor. In his academic career, he taught at Faculties and Academies at Universities of Tuzla, Bihac, “Dzemal Bijedic” in Mostar and Sarajevo.
Prof. Dr. Rifat Skrijelj is the author and co-author of 52 scientific and expert papers, 49 congress press releases, seven books, monographs and textbooks. He participated in 55 national research and professional projects, and two international scientific research projects.

He held the office of the University of Sarajevo Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Dean since 2011. Since 2007 he has been a UNSA Senator and a member in the Ethics Committee.

During the last fifteen years he held numerous important positions for the development of society and the academic community. He was the president of the Council for Environmental Protection of Sarajevo Canton Government and actively worked on the affirmation of science in solving problems related to the environment protection. He was also president of the Biological Society of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Chairman of the Steering Board at the UNSA Faculty of Forestry. He actively participated in adoption of the Law on Higher Education in the Canton of Sarajevo Parliament and advocated the improving of the students and faculty standards at higher education institutions in Sarajevo. He was an active participant in the 1992-1995 Liberation War with -serving 32 months military-serving.

UNSA Senate elected Prof. Dr. Rifat Skrijelj into the office of Rector of the University of Sarajevo on Senate Session of 12 May 2016.
